What kind of estimate should I get? PDF Print E-mail

Estimates for long distance moves may cause some confusion and trying to decide which one is best for you can be a little overwhelming.

First option and the best option of all is the Binding Not-To-Exceed estimate. This means that if the actual weight of your shipment is more than the written estimate, you still pay the amount quoted; however, if the actual weight is less than the written estimate, you pay the lower amount.

Second option is a binding estimate which means that the price quoted in the estimate is the amount you pay, even if your shipment weighs more than the estimated amount or less than the estimated amount. This is your second best choice.

Third option is a non-binding estimate. A non-binding estimate is not a contract. It is an estimated cost of your move and does not bind your mover to this price. This means your total price can be lower or higher then the price the moving company initially quoted you. The problem with this kind of estimate is that you have no guarantee of a cost to move.

Here are some important points that will help you get a good and accurate quote:

The price of the moving estimate should never be your main factor. A company reputation goes a long way. Deal only with licensed and insured movers.

Get several moving estimates. They're free, so take advantage of them.

A visual estimate is always better then a telephone or an internet estimate. Professional mover need to see exactly what has to be moved.

Show the on site estimator everything, including the basement, attic, garden shed, garage, closets.

Find out how binding each estimate is. It will be easy to discard high estimates but should you receive an estimate that is substantially lower than the others, inquire as to why. Maybe the estimator didn't see a piece of heavy machinery such as the washing machine in the basement. If he did and he sticks by his estimate, ask him to make it binding and to put it in writing. Always have things in writing.

Ask the estimator about purchasing extra valuation / insurance. Movers will provide you with only a basic insurance that will not cover the replacement of more expensive items.

What is an Intrastate Move? PDF Print E-mail

Long distance move is a service that is performed outside a 60 mile radius of your current location.  When making a long distance move,it is important to use state and interstate licensed movers becausethat will guarantee that the company you choose is insured. It might behelpful to contact either the U.S.Department of Transportation or theBetter Business Bureau to obtain movers’ performance

This will help to narrow down the list of the qualified movers.

Most long distance moves are priced according to the cubic feet or the weight of the shipment. Some companies will charge for both.  A general accepted industrystandard to convert weight into cubic feet or vise versa is to take theweight and divide it by 7 to get cubic feet or to take cubic feet andmultiply it by 7 to get the weight.

What is a local move? PDF Print E-mail

Local move is a short distance move that is performed within a city or within a 60 mile radius of your current location.  Local move can be performed within a state or between two states.  In order for a moving company to perform a move within a state the mover must be licensed by the State Department of Transportation (DOT) or by the U.S. Department of Transportation if the move is between two states.

Depending on the services requested, local move may take a couple of hours or a couple of days.  Most of the local moves are charged based on the hourly rate.  You will pay for each mover for each hour that work is being done.  In addition to this, moving companies will charge for the travel time; one hour each way.

Moving companies offer a variety of packing and material services.  You will be charged for the carton boxes used during the move, blankets used to protect the furniture, tape and/or bubble wrap.  Some moving companies offer custom wood crating for fragile items such as fine art, antiques, marble and glass.

The level of the liability assumed by movers for the value of the goods that they move varies from company to company.  You need to be aware of the amount of protection and the charges associated with each option. Insurance is often the area in moving that people know very little about and as a result make poor choices. The most basic coverage for the loss or damage of the goods required by law is the Basic Carrier Liability.  For the local moves, van line is required to "cover" your possessions at no additional charge up to 30 cents per pound (and 60 cents per pound for long distance moves).  For example, if a vase weighs 5 pounds, moving company will cover only $1.50 regardless of the value of the piece.  If you wish to be paid in full for lost or damaged goods, it is recommended to buy additional insurance.

What is released value Insurance? PDF Print E-mail

A released value plan is offered at no cost andcovers very little under the current laws. For any given article oritem within the movers’ possession that is either lost or damaged, theclient has the right to collect only 60 cents per pound. A seven poundlaptop, which is on the heavy end these days, would only be worth $4.20in compensation under the released value plan. A ten pound stereo wouldbe written off at $6.00.

There is no assumption made that you want thisinsurance plan. It is free of charge but you must specifically detailon the paperwork that you are interested in this plan over the fullvalue protection plan. If you do not indicate that you would prefer thereleased value insurance, you will be charged for the full valueprotection plan and compensated under those laws in the event of lossor damage.

Each of these insurance plans is governedspecifically by the Department of Transportation rather than under theU.S. Insurance and state insurance laws. Therefore, not all U.S andstate insurance actions can be taken under the same assumptions asother types of insurance.
