Long distance move is a service that is performed outside a 60 mile radius of your current location.  When making a long distance move, it is important to use state and interstate licensed movers because that will guarantee that the company you choose is insured.  It might be helpful to contact either the U.S. Department of Transportation or the Better Business Bureau to obtain movers ’ performance track records.  This will help to narrow down the list of the qualified movers.

Most long distance moves are priced according to the cubic feet or the weight of the shipment.  Some companies will charge for both.  A general accepted industry standard to convert weight into cubic feet or vise versa is to take the weight and divide it by 7 to get cubic feet or to take cubic feet and multiply it by 7 to get the weight.  The price for either one will depend and is based upon the distance of the move.

Included in your move costs, at no additional charge, is the basic insurance coverage of $.60 per pound as is required by law.  For example if the lamp weighs 10 pounds the most you will receive for it in case of loss or damage is $6.  If you want to receive a full value of the item, it is recommended to buy an additional insurance either from the moving company or your own insurance company.

In addition to the above mentioned cost components, movers will change you for any special services such as packing, materials, stairs, etc.  It is also important to find out about the access to your new home.  There are instances were a large tractor trailer will not fit or is not allowed to access a narrow residential street.  In this case moving company will off-load to a smaller truck for a delivery.  You will be charged for the extra labor time.
